Day 1 Arrive Zurich

Discover the sights of Zurich on our Circle Tour, aboard the unique ‘Classic Trolley,’ as you listen to comprehensive commentary by headset. (duration: 2 hrs) Then, enjoy a scenic cruise on Lake Zurich. (cruise duration: 1.5 hrs) Relax as you pass stately villas, picturesque villages perched on vineyard-clad hills, and local swimming areas. Spend the rest of the day exploring this trend-setting city. Zurich is a center of the arts, and teems with cool places for dining and shopping.

Day 2 Zurich

After breakfast, depart on our scenic full-day excursion to Mt. Pilatus. Travel by coach to Kriens for the panoramic gondola and aerial cable car that takes you to the peak of Mt. Pilatus, for magnificent views of the Alps and lake below. Eperience a dramatic descent to Alpnachstad via the world’s steepest cogwheel railway. Then, take a lovely boat ride on pretty Lake Lucerne to reach Lucerne, and enjoy time at your leisure before returning to Zurich by coach. (tour duration: 9 hrs)

Day 3 Zurich – St. Gallen

Depart Zurich. En route to St. Gallen, visit the Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe. (drive distance: 45 min) The nearby town of Schaffhausen is well worth a visit too. See the imposing Munot Fortress and Renaissance buildings – richly decorated with lavishly painted facades. We also suggest stopping in the lively, charming town of Stein am Rhein, where sights include the well-preserved medieval Monastery of St. Georgen and the Lindwurm Museum. Arrive at the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage suite of St. Gallen. (drive distance: 1 hr) See the Baroque cathedral, where the Abbey Library houses some 160,000 documents, some of which are hand-written, dating back a thousand years.

Day 4 St. Gallen – St. Moritz

Visit Appenzell, (drive distance: 30 min) known for colorfully decorated traditional houses, nestled amid lush-green hills. The Appenzell are proud of their customs, and wear traditional costumes on special occasions. Perhaps you'll glimpse a cattle drive to or from the Alps, as though stepping into a picture postcard. Appenzell is one of Switzerland’s most active centers for yodeling and other folklore traditions. Then, continue to visit Vaduz, in Liechtenstein. (drive distance: 45 min) Stop at the Liechtenstein Center to learn about this diminutive country, then hike up to Vaduz Castle for stunning views. Then, it’s on to St. Moritz, one of the world’s most prestigious ski resorts. (drive distance: 1.5 hr)

Day 5 St. Moritz – Locarno

Take in sights of elegant St. Moritz, such as the leaning tower – a remnant of the Mauritius Church – or the Segantini Museum. En route to Locarno, stop at the not-to-be-missed Muottas Muragl, (drive distance: 10 min) from which the beautiful Engadin unfolds before you, against the backdrop of the mountains surrounding this high-altitude valley. The lake district spreads out on the valley floor below; this view is notably wonderful at sunset. Arrive in Locarno, a town boasting the warmest climate in Switzerland, and located on Lake Maggiore. (drive distance: 2.5 hrs)

Day 6 Locarno – Lugano

See the sights of Locarno on your own before making the short drive to Lugano. (drive distance: 45 min) From Lugano, take our tour that includes a boat ride to Melide to visit Swissminiatur, a model village of Switzerland’s most picturesque sites, featuring a 3560-meter model railway. You can take a roundtrip funicular ride to the top of Monte Bre mountain for a terrific view of Lake Lugano – and maybe even Monte Rosa, Switzerland's highest mountain. (tour duration: 1 hr)

Day 7 Depart Lugano or extend your stay

We suggest you extend your stay and visit Zermatt. See the iconic pyramid-shaped Matterhorn, said to be the most photographed mountain in the world.
